How to Stop Puppy
Chewing
Puppies are the most adorable of pets, but when they start to chew
everything in sight, even the cutest puppy can seem like the devil incarnate!
However with a few simple tips, you can
stop puppy chewing quite easily.
Puppy Chewing is totally natural. Your puppy communicates with his
mouth. He will explore all new textures and tastes, and most of all, your puppy will be teething.
Dogs are like babies when they start teeting, unfortunately, your
puppy will probably chew everything in sight.
Fix Puppy Chewing
To solve chewing problems is relatively simple. The following tips
will enable you to eliminate inappropriate chewing.
1. Manage the Environment
A puppy can only chew items that he can get to. Puppy proof your home
by putting away anything within reach that he could chew on. Use a bitter spray on items that can't be
moved.
2. Provide Him with Toys
Interactive toys, such as Kong Toys, will keep his attention and
provide him with an appropriate item to chew on. (Try adding slices of cheese or peanut butter to make it more
enjoyable for him.)
3. Crate/Playpen
Use a crate or playpen when you can't supervise your puppy. He can't
chew items he can't get to (yes, this is a theme). Keep an eye on him when he's out and make him earn access to the
house. Most disasters occur when an untrained puppy is left unattended.
4. Keep it Simple (Avoid Similar Items)
No socks, shoes, etc. as chew toys. Anything that is or that
resembles items you don't want him to chew should not be used as a toy.
5. Reward the Right Behaviors
Reward him for chewing on appropriate items. Praise and attention
reinforce the behavior, making it more likely that he will do that in the future.
6. Don't Punish after the Fact
If you come home and discover that he chewed up something he should
not have, roll up a newspaper and thump yourself on the head. He can only chew items he has access to. Did you give
him free run of the house? Stop doing that.
7. Trade a Toy
If you catch him in the act, trade him an appropriate toy and then
praise him for chewing on it. Don't waste time scolding him; there are limitless items he shouldn't chew on - teach
him what to do instead of constantly correcting him for guessing wrong.
Solving chewing problems is relatively easy. The most important thing
is to set him up to succeed. Control the environment, provide appropriate toys, and show him what he should
do.
